A little about TeachMeet
TeachMeets as we know them today began in Scotland in 2006. They arrived in Australia a few years later, with a keen group of teachers in Sydney taking on the challenge of establishing a new kind of professional learning network. The basis of this network would be TeachMeets: free, open, fun and fast-paced events that distils the best of conferences into a chat by the bar at a pub.
We are not sponsored or aligned with any particular body or entity. From time to time, venues or organisations will support us to secure a space but only to ensure a free event for teachers attending. There's no membership fee, just your curiosity and enthusiasm to share! Everyone has something to learn and everyone has something to share. |
TeachMeets have been hosted in most major Australian cities and towns, regional areas, online, as well as at major conferences like EduTech and institutions such as Taronga Zoo and the Sydney Opera House. A typical TeachMeet is a small(ish) gathering of educators from all sectors and levels, from Early Childhood through to Higher Education, at an informal place like a pub, library or school venue, who listen to other participants explain - briefly - an idea they've tried and what they've learned as a result.
TeachMeets are not keynotes. They are not lengthy workshops. They are gatherings of people with little to no time to deliver and participate in quick, informal presentations. The intent of TeachMeets is to begin a conversation. The breaks are as important as the talks. The participants are the presenters.

It's a mark of the success of TeachMeets and similar 'unconference' style, teacher-led initiatives that now many conferences have adopted this model as part of their offerings.
